Stainless steel grades and salt air: 304 vs 316

Why the grade of stainless used in railings and fittings makes a visible difference near the sea.

Stainless steel is not one material. The grade used in railings and fittings makes a visible difference within a few seasons near the sea.

What separates the grades

Grade 316 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to chloride corrosion from salt spray. Grade 304 is common and performs well inland, but near the coast it is more prone to surface staining, often called tea staining.

Where it matters in Cayman

On an island, most exterior locations see some salt exposure. We specify 316 marine-grade stainless for exterior railings, cable and fittings as standard.

Keeping it looking new

  • 01Rinse with fresh water regularly, more often on exposed elevations
  • 02Avoid steel wool and chloride-based cleaners
  • 03Choose brushed or satin finishes, which show marks less than polished ones
